Spring has sprung – Really!?

Spring has sprung, the grass is ris, I wonder where the flowers is“. So said ee Cummings.   Well, whilst the grass is ris and flowers are blooming all over the countryside and in our gardens, has Spring really sprung?

The first day of September is traditionally the first day of Spring, when we fantasise about throwing off our winter woollies, losing our winter flab, and miraculously metamorphosing into toned and tanned perfection.

Unfortunately, that never seems to happen. The first day of Spring arrives and we continue to wear our jackets and jerseys and mumble and grumble about how long winter has been and wonder whether summer will ever arrive. And perhaps the reason for this is that Spring actually does NOT arrive on the first day of September, but rather on the 23rd of September – the Spring Equinox – which is still several weeks away.

(A short geography lesson on the equinoxes – there are two equinoxes every year, in September and March, when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal. During an equinox the earth’s North and South Poles are not tilted toward or away from the sun, and the duration of daylight is theoretically the same at all points on the earth’s surface.)

The good news is that we still have nearly three weeks in which to “spring clean” ourselves – to commence that exercise routine, to cut back on hearty and warming winter eating, to display our winter white limbs to the warm sunshine and, like the Queen bumblebee, emerge rejuvenated from our winter hibernation.

Apart from spring cleaning ourselves, Spring is also the perfect time for spring cleaning our homes and lives. Look around the room you are sitting in now – how much clutter has accumulated? How many items of unwanted winter clothing are clogging your wardrobe? Whilst you have been warmly cocooned in your winter space have your shelves and cupboards become a repository for all manner of useless odds and ends and bits and pieces?

If you are feeling weighed down at the end of winter and don’t know how you are going to get the spring back in your step and life, give SORTED a call – we will ensure that you leave the winter blues behind and stride unencumbered into Spring.
